From Widowed Warriors
Stories, reflections, and updates about moving forward after loss and the people finding their own way.
Why Widowed Warriors?
Why movement, physical challenge, and community became part of my path through grief.
Widowed Warriors started with a simple idea: some of us who have lost a spouse find something we need by pushing ourselves physically.
Everyone grieves differently. For me, the conventional routes simply haven't been enough. Counseling, grief support groups, retreats, and other resources have helped many people, and I am genuinely thankful for the conversations and support my family and I have received through them.
But at the end of the day, grief is something you have to find your own way through. And for me, one of the few things that has consistently helped has been physical exhaustion.
Running. Training. Competing. Pushing my body until I don't have much left.
There is something about reaching that point that quiets everything for a while. It doesn't make the grief disappear. It doesn't fix anything. But it gives my mind somewhere else to go. Sometimes that little bit of space is enough to help me find my footing again.
I started Widowed Warriors because I have to believe there are others out there who understand that feeling.
This isn't about saying we all grieve the same way. We don't. And it isn't about replacing counseling, support groups, or any of the other resources that help people after loss.
It's about creating something else.
A community for those of us who find some measure of peace by moving, sweating, struggling, and occasionally pushing ourselves farther than we thought we could go.
We may each be fighting our own battle, but maybe we don't have to fight it completely alone.
That's what I want Widowed Warriors to become.
We're just getting started. We're looking for other Widowed Warriors across the country and exploring the kinds of challenges we might take on together. Right now, we're looking at a future GORUCK event, but that's only one possibility.
If there's an endurance event, physical challenge, or adventure that has helped you, or something you've always wanted to try, tell us about it.
Maybe we'll find a way to take it on together.
Fight your own battle. Just don't fight it alone.
